In 2008, TransCape initiated a scholarship program which offers dedicated and top-performing students an opportunity to a better education at a more advanced school in Mthatha. Since then at least two new scholarships have been started every year. Candidates are selected from the top-performing grade 10 students attending the After School Enrichment program. The project covers their fees, clothes, accommodation, transport and food up to Grade 12 and one-year tertiary education. They are regularly monitored and support are available 24/7.
Schools in rural areas in the Eastern Cape have an average pass rate of below 30%. Public schools lack sufficient resources, and teachers are unmotivated. Sometimes, students have to walk up to 16 km a day to school. The traditional lifestyle of people living in rural areas negatively influences school attendance, as children have to participate in many livelihood chores. No lighting and private space at home also makes it very difficult for students to study.
The project aim is to offer two Grade 10 students per year an opportunity to attend a school of much higher quality in Mthatha. Through the project, their fees, uniforms, accommodation and food are covered. They are monitored and supported during their enrollment in the Mthatha School. They are supported up to one-year tertiary education.
Investing in talented youths doesn’t just change the lives of the scholarship students and their families-- it also provides role models to younger students, as well as cultivating leaders for communities.
